Pet Stores – Three Tips for Organizing your Ecommerce Catalog

by | Apr 11, 2018 | Ecommerce, Websites

The first big task that many pet food retailers face when deciding to build an ecommerce website is how to organize their inventory for display online. These task can seem daunting at first but it is really just a matter of execution after you’ve thought through a good plan for organization. Here are three tips to help you organize and display your pet products online!

One – Organized Pet Food Based On Flavor (not size)

All of your pet food should be organized based on the flavor of the food with variants for the different sizes. For example, Blue Buffalo Chicken & Rice should be displayed as one product with three variant options, 5-lb, 15-lb and 30-lb.

Do not make the mistake of having the 5-lb bag, 15-lb bag and 30-lb bag all be their own product. This will confuse consumers. The different sized bags are different variants of the same product, not different products!

Two- Consumer Facing Brand, Not Vendor

When you display your products in your online store make sure that you take the time to include the brand in the title of each product. Not only will this be good for search engines, but it will also help consumers to know if they’ve found the right product.

Do not make the mistake of using the distributor as the vendor in your online catalog. Your consumers want to know the Brand, not necessarily the Vendor when they are shopping your catalog.

Three – Group Cat & Dog Toys by Toy Type then Color, Size

When you add toys such as KONG dog toys to your ecommerce catalog you will find many products that come in multiple variant combinations. For example, a squeaky toy may come in red, blue and green as well as large, medium and small.

Do not make the mistake of having many different products for these variants. This shouldn’t be 9 different products in your catalog. (ie, Red Medium Ball, Red Small Ball, Red Large Ball, Blue Small Ball…etc…) That will confuse your customers! Set up this product as one product with the option to select the type of variations of that product that your customer is looking for.
