Lightspeed Web Store Design Considerations

by | Apr 11, 2018 | Ecommerce, Websites

What makes great ecommerce design and how do we define it? Lightspeed eCom is a very robust ecommerce platform geared towards helping your business. However, the platform is so powerful, with so many templates to choose from, sometimes it can be difficult to know how to begin. In this article, we’ll explore some of the important considerations to make before beginning work on the design of your new website.

  1. What is your main business goal? – Defining the main goals for your business will be one of the most important first steps before beginning work on your new website. The design of your Lightspeed web store should be an extension and representation of your business and what you are trying to accomplish. For example-
    1. Is the main goal of your business to drive traffic into your brick and mortar store with the ecommerce component as a side convenience for existing customers?
    2. Is your goal to build an online business with a small brick and mortar or warehouse presence?

Depending on your answers to these questions you may choose to build your website in very different ways. If your main goal is to drive brick and mortar traffic, with ecom as a convenience, then you may add a storefront photo as the first thing visitors to your website see. If your goal is to build an ecommerce business with little or no brick and mortar presence, your homepage may more heavily feature discount codes and featured products.

  1. What is your Unique Selling Proposition? – Why do customers buy from your website right now? Why do you expect them to continue purchasing (or to attract new people) to purchase from your Lightspeed eCom web store?
    1. Do you offer the lowest prices?
    2. Do you offer the best selection?
    3. Do you offer unique products people cannot buy anywhere else?

As you’re thinking about your answers to these questions, consider that these will be important things to highlight immediately in order to turn visitors into buyers. How will you highlight these features? As you design the site it will be important to consider where you highlight these unique selling propositions and how. Will you use pictures? Videos? Text? What will that look like and on what pages should this information be located?

  1. What features does your website need to include? – Websites today need to include a plethora of different features and functionality. The selection and implementation of these features and functionality is completely dependent on your unique business. A few examples-
    1. Local Delivery – Will customers need to be able to order off your website for local delivery?
    2. In-Store Pickup – Will customers need to be able to order off your website and pick a date and time to pick up their items at your store?
    3. Recurring Orders – Do you want customers to schedule orders on a recurring basis on your site?
    4. Accounts- Will customers be able to login to their own accounts on your site?
    5. Comments – Will visitors be able to leave comments on your products or blogs?

Whether or not you implement these key features could change the entire design of your website. Be sure to consider how you would like your website to function as a baseline for informing the design or template of choice for your new website.
